Reduce out all around the impacted drywall with a drywall saw. These handsaws are offered inexpensively at any community hardware store. Make guaranteed that you cut away all impacted drywall by retaining wide margins around the defect.
Joint Compound – Our first try at fixing the outer corners was unsuccesful. We used only joint compound and no corner tape. The goal was to apply enough joint compound to cover the corners and then smooth it; but this was nearly impossible. If we applied it thin, the damaged corner would show through the joint compound. If we applied it liberally, then we couldn’t get the wall and corner smooth again.
Apply a thin layer of drywall compound to the seams and cover with mesh tape, bedding the tape in the drywall compound. Then apply some more drywall compound to completely cover the tape. Let it dry, then apply more drywall compound, feathering the edges as you go. Like we did for the patches we discussed earlier, it will take several coats, as well as a light sanding, between each coat. This is how to achieve a smooth finish that is virtually undetectable.
Be prepared to spend time on the job. I have seen a professional apply drywall tape and joint compound to an entire three bedroom apartment in less than 2 hours – you will be exceptional if you can accomplish the task of taping a single room in 2 hours. In addition, tape is normally applied the first day; on the second and third days you will apply joint compound again over all the joints and nails. Nevertheless you can learn to produce a good quality finished wall.
On the day of the work he came on time, worked very well with my building requirements to get his stuff in and started work. Even after inspecting the damage he did not add on any hidden fees and really stuck to the quote he gave me – which was such a new experience! (No hidden fees..whaaa??) At this point I was starting to think, OMG I wonder what else is going to go horribly wrong today because this whole dry wall thing was turning out to be too easy!… Read More

Corner joints are best done over two days for the beginner. It is very difficult to apply joint compound to one side of the corner and then the other side without disturbing the first side, although the corner knife may be used again for the block coat. Scan a defective light set and it will beep to indicate where a power interruption occurs, helping you find the area needing repair. After the adhesive has dried, cut a repair panel to fit, and fasten it to the stud and the backing board with drywall screws.
If you could imagine applying drywall texture onto this kind of surface, the moisture content from the mixed texture would take longer to evaporate/penetrate, into/through, the surface. Was just stood up by Edward after he confirmed my appointment last night. I asked him if he wanted to reschedule and if he was still interested in the job and he replied by saying he was too busy for the job. Would have been nice to know that before he said he would take the job. A wasted afternoon. i am excited to begin using this Wall Rx Drywall Repair Kit and presuming the demonstration video accurately represents the product i’d love to be their sales person!

Don’t overwork the compound (because it dries quickly and loses its creaminess). Apply it, make a few smoothing stroke and then WALK AWAY! You’ll need a knockdown blade to smooth down the texture once it’s set up. Because of the large surfaces that we were texturing, we purchased a Marshalltown KD24CD 24-Inch Curved Blade Knockdown Knife with DuraSoft Handle – that’s a mouthful! Allow the textured compound to dry according to the manufacturer’s instructions, then prime and paint the surface.
First, even off the edges, so you can have a beautiful square hole to start working on, you can use a piece of wood if you want to screw the piece of sheetrock in place. Im not the cheapest guy on craigslist and I don’t want to be , I have seen some of the work done by other DRYWALL painters guys and I would be ashamed to have charged for such atrocities , I am the owner. I didn’t realize there was so much to consider when hanging a picture. Thank you so much for all the information.… Read More

Before buying a kit, check the inside of the toilet tank for obvious problems. If the toilet is running constantly it could something as simple as a foreign obstruction keeping the flapper valve from closing. The rod holding the float might have gotten bent. The chain between the flush lever and the flapper valve could be tangled, holding the flapper open. If none of these are found then it’s time to replace some parts.
Heating/Air Conditioning – A lot of the older homes are heated with oil or an oil/kerosene blend. This can get extremely expensive in the winter months especially if you live in a colder location. Central heat and air is a popular feature, just make sure both are in working order before you sign on the dotted line. I didn’t and found out by accident that my central air didn’t work. I was fortunate in that the guy that owns the park had it fixed the next morning at his expense. If that had been on my dollar, it would probably still be needing repair in 2015!
Cut two pieces of lumber to exceed the height or width of your new opening by about 4”. Center them vertically on each side of the opening, or along the top and bottom leaving half their width exposed. If using studs for screwing surfaces, just install a single board in the center or along the opposite side of the opening. Position the board(s) behind the surrounding drywall in the cavity between studs. Use your drill to drive drywall screws through the drywall and the wood brace at the ends or along the opening.
Load about half of a 4-inch taping-knife blade with joint compound and, holding the knife at a 45-degree angle, apply it to the seams. Apply the next layer with a 6-inch blade after the first layer is completely dry, usually after 24 hours. Do the same for the third layer, only this time use the 10-inch blade. Finally, smooth the surface when it is completely dry with a wet sponge and sand the seams with the sandpaper wrapped around the sanding block.… Read More

It turned out that the central AC drain line was backed up. Luckily, the parental units had purchased an extended warranty on the system. They had purchased this system from Sears in 2004 and continued to renew the warranty each year. Each renewal also includes an annual service so it nearly pays for itself. Not to mention that in the heat of August here in Florida, the whole system went down and they ended up replacing the motor (a $700 fix) at no additional cost thanks to the warranty. Anyway, my point is that warranties for expensive things are nice to have. The warranty completely covered the drain line fix and the ceiling drywall repair (about $900 fix). …happy dance.
Use a drywall or putty knife to apply spackle or joint compound (mud”) directly to small blemishes or to apply mud over mesh tape. Apply several thin layers (with drying time allowed between layers) rather than a single, thick coat over deep voids and taped areas. Applying thick layers or subsequent coats too early can result in shrinking and cracking. For hairline scratches, caulk or spackle can be applied directly to the area with a putty knife, caulking gun, or even your finger.
Below this image is the final stage of repair. I applied spray texture, using a spray texture hopper gun, attached to a air compressor too force compound through the hopper, it has a texture dial for 7 different spray patterns. This is a Marshalltown sharpshooter sprayer,I used the smallest setting to apply a fine texture to perfectly match the exsisting wall texture.
Smooth the compound with the putty knife. Pull the blade toward you in one steady, smooth motion, letting the knife make a 30-degree angle with the wall. If your finish doesn’t look smooth, simply wipe off the blade, wet it and scrape the wall again. Make the mud as smooth as you can, but don’t worry if it’s not perfect. You will be able to sand the compound later when it’s dry (although this can create a bit of a mess, so it’s best to leave it as smooth as possible before it dries).… Read More
and add three inches. The butterfly patch can patch a hole from two inches to twelve inches. After you measure the widest part of the damage, add three inches to your measurements and cut a new piece of drywall that size. This cut does not have to be exact. To cut the drywall, but the finished side up and score the cut lines with the razor knife, break at scored marks. Now put the finished side of the drywall face down and score the back of the drywall all the way around about 1.5 inches.
NOTE: Your drill bit should be a tiny bit smaller than the closed end of the anchor. Your screw should be at least 1.25 inches long (for drywall) if you are not going into a stud. The screw should not be longer than the anchor. The bolt should be tapped gently into the hole and should fit snugly. The screw should protrude from the wall just enough to hang your item on (usually 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch). For plaster walls, screws should be at least 3 inches long as the plaster itself may be up to one inch thick.
If you chose the quickset mud method, be ready. I recommend using a corded power drill, mixing rod, and a 5 gallon bucket. For most average patches, just cover the bottom of the 5 gallon bucket with water and add in the dry compound. Start mixing until you get a good consistency. You will need to add more water or compound as you mix. It shouldn’t be very think or very runny. To me it is consistent with clay, if not more liquid than that.
Remove the old flapper valve by either working it off of the supporting overflow tube or simply cutting it off (it will cut easily with scissors) and replace it with a new one. Some new flappers come with a chain attached, while others will use the old chain. Either way, the chain between the flush lever and the flapper needs to be loose enough it will not keep the flapper raised, but tight enough that pressing the flush handle will raise the flapper.
Plaster walls are very difficult, if not impossible, to push a thumbtack, push pin, or a utility knife into. (If you try this, find an inconspicuous spot where it will not show.) Be careful, though, some plaster walls may cause the knife blade to snap off. (Remember playing rock, paper, scissors as a kid? Plaster is the rock and the knife replaces the scissors).… Read More
To sum it up, drywall can be a complex, and multi- stage process, requiring two sets of hands and an accurate eye, and careful consideration to be successful. For this reason, it is not often the small repair” some people expect to have completed quickly, and can cost between $250 and $850 or more, for the post leak repair described here. Hopefully, if you misunderstood the proper steps of drywall before you now can help prepare yourself to site and correct leaks long before they become disasters inside walls and ceilings of this magnitude.
If the bead is dented, use a metal-cutting hack saw to cut through the bead above and below the damaged area (image 1). Then use a utility knife to cut vertically around the corner bead (image 2). Corner bead is usually attached with drywall nails, so use a pry bar or claw hammer to remove the fasteners. Place a taping knife or thin plywood behind the tool to prevent additional damage to the wall — be especially careful not to lever against unsupported drywall or the tool will punch a hole that will require a more extensive repair.
Sanding drywall compound produces a fine dust that gets onto and into everything. Because it is water-soluble, wiping the dust with a sponge makes a royal mess! By collecting the dust at the work area, either through wet sanding or through use of a vacuum, you eliminate much of your cleanup. Since small holes generate small amounts of dust, these simple methods are more than adequate.
Picture hooks and screws can be used to hang lighter items on any type of wall in just about any location without the need to search for studs. To be on the safe side, I would recommend this method only for items weighing no more than 10 to 12 lbs and prefer to keep them closer to half that, although picture hooks are available for up to 25 lbs and more.
Larger holes in a wall require a patch made of drywall, which is also commonly referred to as wall board or gypsum board. The key to this type of repair is to make sure your drywall patch is the same thickness as the drywall used in your wall. The drywall in most homes is ½-inch thick. But double check the thickness of your existing drywall before heading to your local independent home improvement retailer. This is one time when it’s handy to have a hole in the wall.… Read More
Tough as it is, drywall can withstand only limited abuse. A door flung open with too much force can produce a doorknob-size hole in the wall. This kind of damage looks bad, but even large holes are easy to fix.
Water problems can cause tremendous damage to a home’s roof, structural supports, and foundation. It’s one of the easiest problems to spot, and if caught early enough, can be a simple repair. Keep a wet cloth and bucket nearby when working with texturing sprays. If the spray happens to get on an unintended area it needs to be cleaned quickly. If it is left to dry, the spray will be very hard to remove without a sander. Cover the patch and tape with joint compound, feathering the edges. Allow the compound to dry according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Apply a second coat if needed. Sand smooth. I know Wayne, and sorry to hear you had to have a whole new roof. You are right not a lot out there in the books on small patch jobs for the ceiling. I know they don’t tell you to make sure to change the insulation in that area too.
Before drilling a wall ensure that you know where cables and pipes are routed. You can buy a voltage detector for detecting the presence of power cables. A toolbelt is in fact what he needs. I will try to get one for him this Valentine’s day. Thanks for posting this. Apply additional coats of compound if you’re not satisfied with the results thus far. Lightly sand or damp-wipe after each coat. The blocks allowed the planes to hang straight without damaging the propellors or landing gears and the Velcro made them easy to remove for play and to return to their spot on the wall for storage and display. Just be sure the softer smoother half of the Velcro is on the removable object.
On occasions, as one practices the fine art of combing; rolling a band of the texture onto the width of the ceiling or the wall, and then drawing a specific texturing comb tool through the applied mud, creates a plethora of effective, bold designs and patterns, depending which comb tool you are using, and which pattern you are creating. Use a peel-and-stick patch to cover doorknob holes. The patch is an aluminum screen covered by fiberglass mesh. Peel off its backing and press the patch in place.… Read More
The method used to mount cupboards, brackets for shelves, coat hooks etc on a wall depends on the nature of the wall construction.
One way of applying the different textures is by spraying the texture on. Which can be applied either in fine or coarse texture depending on what you like. Our drywall contractor can apply both complex and simple textures. Brushes – Typically I buy inexpensive sets of brushes like this one , especially for basic paint projects like priming walls. Straight pins: I always use straight pins to hold the patch in it’s proper place until I get the patch sewn on with the machine. Sometimes, I will get the machine right up on the needles and the material of the jeans be so thin I would have to adjust the way I was sewing the jeans. Below I will explain and show you a foolproof method for drywall repair that’s as close to perfect as possible.
Now, screw your drywall patch to the wooden cleats, again being careful not to break the drywall’s paper coating. With the way the economy is right at the moment I think camping is going to have a revival this season. My house may be short on pretty, but it’s long on storage space. I have a total of 20 kitchen cabinets and four of these huge closets – you’re only seeing one side of it open!
Positioning a patch that has to edge snugly up against a seam can be difficult because it will tend to slide around once glue is applied and because the pressure plate generally obscures vision. I practice aligning it a few times before applying the glue. We recently changed our water heating unit. Not because of the leaks, just cause it’s been over 10yrs old and we needed a bigger one.… Read More

If I had a dollar for every drywall repair kit I have seen at the various conventions I attend, I would be a very rich man. Many of these drywall repair kits are wonderful, and a few border on genius. I have always liked the one that was a thin perforated piece of aluminum. It had adhesive on one side. You peeled off a layer of protective paper, stuck the metal over the gaping hole making sure the edges of the metal lapped over solid drywall at least one-half inch and you were 80% finished!
Next, place the drywall patch over the hole in the wall and trace the shape on the wall with a pencil. Be sure to check for any electrical wires or plumbing lines that might be located behind the wall where you will be cutting. If there are no electrical or plumbing lines present, use a drywall saw to punch a hole through the drywall along your line. Then cut out the shape you traced. If electrical wires or plumbing lines are present, you may want to call an electrician or a plumber as a precautionary measure.

I love your proposed title! It put a smile on my face right away. When I had a honey to do, the things on my list were not so much about fixing electrical and HVAC or even remodeling, they were more about taking out the trash, washing the windows and dishes, scrubbing the tub, and picking the kid up from after-school activities. So, I don’t think I have any ideas to offer about your request, except that maybe you could put a second book in the works about how the gentleman could be helping out more around the house. Good luck with your project!… Read More

Mold is a major problem by itself, and always reveals water-related issues. Broken pipes and leaky basements are the two most common starting points for mold. Even after fixing the source of water, you’ll still have to contend with the mold. If you see more than ten square feet with growth, you may have to hire a remediation specialist to fix the problem, as it has likely penetrated the ductwork and will spread.
By the time most cars reach the age that the seat coverings begin to split due to normal wear and tear, it’s usually not worth paying to have the seats professionally recovered. At that point, most owners will either just ignore the damage or try some easy fix, which is usually ineffective. Moreover, once a rip begins, it will continue to tear if not stopped, and any underlying foam padding that is exposed to sunlight will rapidly deteriorate.
When I moved into this beautiful Colonial one year ago it had great bones but was in need of major repair, cosmetically. I first made the house livable with as much clean up as possible and made the only wood paneled room my bedroom. I’m assuming that since that room was paneled it was because the plaster behind the paneling was in such bad shape the only solution to the previous owner was to cover it. Not a good solution if you ever tried hanging a picture on a paneled wall with crumbled plaster behind it.
Since many home owners go the for sale by owner route to save money, they often skip the expenses of making the home ready for showing. They may neglect minor repairs that hurt the value of the property, like neglecting to clean finger prints and marks off the wall or repair cracks in the drywall. Yet this hurts them because a property that appears to be in poor repair will not bring as much money as a clean, presentable one – and the difference could be more than it would have cost to clean it up or bring in a realtor who would pretty it up to get the greatest commission possible.… Read More
