Also, check with your local housing authority or city government office that handles building, construction, and permits to make sure they’re a familiar face down there (if you’re getting work done that requires permits) or that there aren’t any outstanding complaints or pending legal issues with the handyman from City Hall’s perspective. Plus, your local building or code inspector will have a good idea of who they enjoy working with, who does good work, and who can barely pass inspection (or doesn’t bother to get inspections done).

All water heaters carry a one year warranty on everything except the tank, so no matter how long of a warranty you purchase, it will only be the tank that carries the extended warranty. Don’t buy the extended warranty, it is useless as the major components will only carry a one year warranty, no matter the length of the extended warranty. Water heater warranties are a scam, so always buy the cheapest and you will be getting the same thing as the longer warranty.

The custom vanity was a great asset to the bathroom. It’s made from a bamboo counter top purchased from Lowe’s for just over $100. The handyman made two pieces from it plus narrow supports that hide underneath, so that the vanity looks like it’s floating (the surfaces were cut just shy of fitting in case the wood expands). We sealed the surfaces with Cabot’s gloss spar varnish with marine durability, so we don’t need to sweat any water getting into the wood. If you look closely, you can see that we sealed the hair line space between the counter and wall with a clear bead of caulking. On top is the the Cheviot Quattro vessel sink we purchased online from Lowes.

An email has been going around this year with ideas for buying locally and keeping the money in our own communities. Some of the ideas in the email included hair care, such as gift certificates for hair cuts; car care such as gift certificates for oil changes, tune-ups, car washes and more; gift certificates for restaurants so the family can enjoy going out to eat (include tip money would be nice too). All of these ideas also help keep the local businesses working.
